Leading US resort developer Las Vegas Sands (LVS) is extremely optimistic about the prospects for resort-entertainment complexes worth over USD6 billion in Vietnam, an official said.

Las Vegas Sands Managing Director of Global Development George Tanasjevich
LVS Managing Director of Global Development George Tanasjevich slammed Vietnam’s anti-gambling policy by boldly stating, “We believe that a portion of Vietnamese residents can afford high-end gambling activities and they should not be banned from entering casinos.”
According to him, as Vietnam is still at the beginning stage for casino development, it’s normal to see public controversy over such kind of investment. However, he claimed that the pros and cons of allowing casinos to operate in the country should be looked at.
“Vietnam should learn from casino development in Singapore which has successfully developed a social security system to discourage residents from gambling in casino en masse. Certain groups of people should be banned from such kind of entertainment in order to prevent possible consequences,” he noted.
Those who cannot afford to gamble in casino could be provided with employment opportunities at LVS in order to help improve their living standards, he shared.
The LVS managing director boasted that Marina Bay Sands had a direct impact on tourist visits to Singapore, but his views were only based on raw international tourist arrivals to the country increasing by 20% in 2010 and by 13% to 13.2 million in 2011, without proving a direct correlation.
According to The Economist magazine, the facility has at least created jobs for over 37,000 residents in Singapore.
During the preparation for its projects in Vietnam, LVS has extensively lobbied the Government in an attempt to change people’s minds, he said.
When asked why LVS was targeting investments in resorts in Hanoi and HCM City, instead of more pleasant coastal areas, he said there was more potential in the major cities. The complexes were mainly designed for businessmen and holiday-makers. He claimed Hanoi and HCM City had infrastructure advantages over other localities as they were home to international airports.
“We realise that Vietnam is currently an attractive tourist destination thanks to its cultural identity and favourable geographical position, and the market will develop rapidly in the time to come.” He claimed “Our projects are expected to help attract more tourists to the country, contribute to the state budget and generate more jobs for local residents.”
He ominously added, “We do think that Vietnam might not allow the implementation of such projects in the short-term, but should not delay a decision as the nation may miss an opportunity to be among the pioneers in the industry”.
He added that LVS has yet to map out a detailed schedule for their projects as they are still waiting for the Vietnamese Government’s decision and support from local residents.Travel to Vietnam | Ebook | du lich lao | visit vietnam | Tour Du Lich 30 - 4 va 1 - 5 | how to solve rubik | How To Weight Loss | how to tie a tie | dac san hue | tourism vietnam |
