There is a sacred supplication that was offered by Prophet Ibraheem (Peace Be Upon Him) and it is revealed in the Holy Qur’an as follows:
“O our Lord! Raise from among them (i.e. the Arab Nation), a Prophet who will recite to them Your Aayaat (Signs & Verses); who will teach them the Kitaab and Hikmah; who will Purify them. Verily, You are the Majestic, the Wise.”
In this verse The Noble Quran highlights for us three distinct functions and responsibilities that were issued to Allaah’s Messenger, Muhammad (Allah’s Peace and blessings be upon him). These three functions of prophethood are:
• Tilaawat or Recitation of the Holy Qur’an
• Ta’leem or Teaching the Meaning of the Holy Qur’an
• Tazkiyah or Purification and Reformation of Mankind
This verse expresses to us the great importance and significance of Qur’an Tilaawah which is undoubtedly one of those acts of worship of the highest merit - which a Muslim can perform consistently during his or her lifetime.
Correct Recitation of the Holy Qur’an is 100% dependent on the knowledge of Tajweed which is specifically stated in the following Qur’anic Verse:
“And, recite the Qur’an with Tarteel.” – Surah Muzammil, Ayah 4
Ali (May Allaah be pleased with him) has mentioned while explaining the deeper meaning of this verse: “It means the beautiful recitation of the words and the knowledge of the wuqoof (stops and pauses) of the Qur’an.”
Zaid Bin Thaabit (May Allaah be pleased with him) is also reported to have said: “Verily, Allah loves that the Qur’an to be recited in the style in which it was revealed.”
This Tarteel and this style are dependent on understanding the principles of Tajweed. Tajweed is one of the unique specialities and living miracles of Allah’s Holy Book. It is a component of preserving the true meaning and purport of the Holy Qur’an.
The Arabic language and particularly Qur’anic Arabic is a very delicate language. Subtle changes in the sounds and phonics of words can have dramatic effects on meanings that are communicated. This is one of the many reasons why we as Muslims should be seriously conscious of our Recitation. Observing the Laws of Tajweed allow us to protect the true meanings of the words of the Qur’an and this is in itself a great reward.
<a> Literally Tajweed</a> means to beautify; to adorn. In the context of Tilaawah it means that branch of Islamic knowledge which teaches the rules which enable one to recite the Qur’an correctly and beautifully.
The Scholars of Islam have written volumes upon volumes, explaining the Knowledge of Tajweed in great detail.
The actual aim of acquiring the Knowledge of Tajweed is the attainment of Allah’s Pleasure since Allah Ta’ala loves that the Holy Qur’an be recited in the beautiful manner and way in which it was revealed. Such ways and styles were taught by Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him) to the Sahaaba.
The illustrious Scholars of Islam have simplified it much for the Ummah by arranging the Knowledge of Tajweed into a systematic branch of knowledge enabling us to acquire it with relative ease.
Today Allah has made modern technologies the tools with which mankind is able to derive both benefit and harm. Alhamdulillah we have been blessed with the understanding that Allah’s Noble Book can be taught and propagated in a million different ways and today we are able to transmit its knowledge using the internet as a practical medium.
